How To Introduce Your Friend As Just A Friend...not a significant other
So we left Raleigh this afternoon, it was just a short jog to Roanoke, Virginia, but a good trip nonetheless. We're still trying to figure out the kinks of this blog so if you have suggestions just let us know. We'll try to make it good though.
Just a few conversation highlights.
- We agree with each other that it feels as though Peace Corps never happened. It seems so long ago and it's such a different world and life that we lived for two years. And no one around here knows that part of our life really. How can we make it feel like we really did live in Africa?
- Also we talked a little about all the questions we've gotten about Peace Corps since we've been back: what's next? how was your experience? did you have toilet paper?
- Being back on a college campus is weird. We feel old - well Phil feels really old. Emma knows very few students on Roanoke's campus, and though the feel of campus is the same it's still somehow different. that was a lifetime away.
- We watched the Presidential Debate this evening. And we were pumped when Obama said he wants to double the size of the Peace Corps. Rock on with your bad self Obama. Let twice as many people save the world.
shout outs for the day: Mom, Dad, Laura, Nancy, Becca, Paul, Kristen, Meredith, McKenzie, Meredith, Rachel, Hannah, Katie.

Truisms! I totally agree, and am also really excited to get to read this blog--finally a worthy distraction! Can't wait to read more thoughts and words of wisdom. (Phil's never trust a fart logic has already preceded him out here in the Bay Area).
Can't wait to see you guys. For now, here's to serendipity and good truck stops.
Miss you times a million,
Pami
Introduce Phil as a hitchhiker from Tanzania. Or you could use the phrase, "THAT ONE" as McCain/ McCan't did.
See you in Colorado.
This looks awesome. It'll be fun to watch your guys trip and hear about it when you get here. Let us know if you need directions from Madison or wherever. Also, James Olney is about an hour from us so he might come chill when you guys come in. Karibuni Sana Minnesota!!!!
oh my gosh. quick, turn back and come "leaf peaping" in New Hampshire. I will give you guys as many free donuts, muffins, and bagels you can fit in the trunk!
In my self-evolved (that's evolved, not involved) life I have come to realize that there is nothing better than a good friend, and they are certainly not "just" a friend. I suggest "one of my besties," to put it in 20-something language. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! And I'm glad you are each other's besties.
Here's to another fabulous adventure! Africa DID happen and it is and will always be part of who you are now. And this journey will become a forever part of you, too.
I totally agree with Gigi. There's no such thing as "just a friend." You can have "just an acquaintance," but friendship can be the most intimate of all relationships, even more than "lover," because it's not propped up by the physical thing. You are so blessed to have such friendships, and I wish you were coming through Northern Virginia!
omg! i love the video. are there enough state songs to play for each one you go through?
jkp
you have to make a stop in memphis just to use that song. go put on your blue suede shoes, board a plane.
jkp
Dr.Peeples other rule is: never pass up a bathroom break when travelling-take heed lest you end up in the sagebrush. Hope the Volunteer state is friendly-tell Grandma and Uncle Jerry hello. Look out for the snow in the Dakotas and Montana- pretend you are at the top of Kili.
When you guys pass thru we will probably be firing the kiln in New London MN. If you want to see an intense, real, ancient tradition of woodfiring pottery you should definitly come. It is only an hour from James Mag.
James Olney
whoooo Emma!! shout out right back at ya :)
love ya,
meredith
Great to have Emma and Phil stop by - just wish we were on the other end of the journey so we could hear all the stories they will accumulate. (Yes that is an invitation to come back any time). Sad to see them move on as well, as it brings back memories of similar trips years ago - before serious jobs, family and the other stuff that keeps us mostly anchored in one spot. Enjoy the road and the adventure! (P.S. pick up a copy of "Travels With Charlie" by John Steinbeck - good reading while on the road)
